Katibawasan Falls in Camiguin
This is the famous Katibawasan Falls. It has been featured in several local flicks in the Philippines more significantly; in what else but the movie "Camiguin".
This was also featured in a stamp that depicted waterfalls in the Philippines. These stamps have also been posted in our blog at http://angelas-store.blogspot.com/2006/09/philippine-waterfalls-on-stamps.html

Fish pen at Camiguin
After an hour on the ferry ride; we disembarked with our vehicle and we rode for about half an hour to a "fishpen" restaurant to have a late lunch.
The dining area were on the fishpens and of course the fish were fresh. They had very large fishes swimming around the pens and people were feeding them. Crabs and shellfish were also available.
The restaurant entrance from the roadway to the fishpen dining area had a mini aviary where they have these eagles.
We have just arrived in Camiguin and we were already enjoying ourselves. It really helps to have someone who knows his way around the place and also being able to transport the vehicle by ferry was a indeed a luxury.

Mountain in Camiguin
Camiguin is a small island province of the Philippines off the northern coast of Mindanao. It belongs to the Northern Mindanao region.
Its capital is Mambajao and it is the second-smallest province both in population and land area. Only Batanes is smaller. The island of Camiguin is in the Bohol Sea about 10 kilometers north of Misamis Oriental.

Ferry Ride to Camiguin
Our Ferry Boat Ride
View from the Ferry
The ride to Camiguin was just around an hour. Out trip was smooth and very enjoyable. The sun was shining; the sky and the sea was blue and the wind was blowing on our face.
And because this was a RO-RO (Roll On - Roll Off) type of transport; we were also able to bring our vehicle on board the ferry. This was a very great advantage when we went around the island.

Pier going to Camiguin
There really are a lot of great attractions near Gingoog. They have the Badjangon Springs; the Alibuag springs; the beaches in Consuelo, in San Juan; at Duka Bay and other resorts; the different farms and orchards, the Tiklas and other waterfalls; rivers and so on. Just have a good guide; have a good time and enjoy.
But one destination we really wanted to go in this Mindanao trip was Camiguin. This beautiful island is just off the coast of Northern Mindanao and we planned to stay there for a couple of days.
The Pier where we were going to catch our ferry was about an hour from Gingoog. It is almost halfway going back to Cagayan de Oro. We got there late for the morning boat but early for the scheduled trip for around midday. There were stores there for refreshments so we just got tickets for us and our vehicle and relaxed.

Duka Bay Resort
One of the nice resort destinations near Gingoog is the Duka Bay resort. It is in nearby Medina and around 20-30 km from Gingoog. From, Cagayan de oro, you will pass by Medina before you get to Gingoog.
There are nice rooms; a fine restaurant and a good swimming area. We used to call the area White beach back when it was still open for public. Now, the use of the beach area is reserved for guests. Duka Bay is also know as a great dive site.

Consuelo - From fishing to fishpens to tourism
Fresh from the sea at Consuelo.
Fishermen used to regularly cast fishing nets from their bancas around the cove. They get enough fishes for their meals and some more for selling. We really enjoyed those fresh catches.
Some years back; we even had a chance to help out the fishermen haul their nets to the shore. But now, because of the fish pens; the bancas seldom cast their nets in the area. Well, this helps the regeneration of the fish population in the area, but still the pens are an eyesore and there seems to be no discipline or guidelines in putting them up. Look at the background of the photo.
We wonder if the local authorities of Consuelo; Magsaysay (Misamis Oriental) are aware of this? Or is the DENR the concerned agency?
Developing the cove area as a tourist spot would be a better alternative and would be more than enough to give the locals a new source of livelihood. The nearby swamps would be great for bird watching and the calm sea in front great for kayakking (jet skis would also be nice but this would only pollute the area because of the fuel it emits). New dive sites can be explored nearby or the beach areas can be used as jump off points to get to the other sites.
Locals can provide boat rides or act as guides for exploration. They will even have a market for any locally produced handicrafts or food products.
Visitors always surely appreciate good food so clean ihaw-ihaw (grilling) restaurants, cafes or bars can also thrive once a critical mass of tourism will be achieved.
Wishful thinking, but it can be done. One step at a time. The Ownners of an adjoining lot initially developed their property as a resort. They had many visitors on weekends. It was mostly family; friends and acquaintances. But the venture was really just a private enterprise and not part of a concerted developing effort and it was short-lived.
